Wilbur “Pete” Peterson, Ph.D. Vice President for Academic Affairs Cumberland
University.
Dr. Peterson has been a professor of biology at Cumberland University since 1990 and currently serves as
Vice President for Academic Affairs. Before joining Cumberland, he taught biology at Martin Methodist
College in Pulaski, TN for 10 years. He also served as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Tennessee
in Knoxville for two years. Dr. Peterson’s teaching responsibilities at Cumberland include Freshman
Biology I and II, Human Anatomy and Physiology, General Ecology and several senior-level field courses.

With degrees from Humboldt State University (Bachelor of Arts in Botany) and the University of Alberta in
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (Ph.D. in Botany), Dr. Peterson has a well-balanced interest in both flowering
and non-flowering botany. He has published several papers concerning the classification and distribution
of mosses. He also serves at the co-sponsor to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity and the Beta Beta
Beta Honor Society for biology students. He has served CU as Faculty Senate President (1986-1987) and as
Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Dr. Peterson enjoys a number of hobbies, including
traveling with his wife, Dr. Anita Peterson. His recent travels have taken him to Antarctica, Australia, China
and Ireland. Future sojourns are planned for Africa and New Zealand.
