Lilly's Collection of Crude Drugs was first sold to pharmacy students by Eli Lilly and Company in 1898. Priced at $10, it contained 172 organic drug specimens. It is believed that part of the examination for obtaining a state license to practice pharmacy required the student to identify a given number of drugs by sight, taste, and smell. One of the containers is missing from the bottom drawer. Other than that all items have been accounted for. {Spanish Fly is the missing one}
The approximate overall dimensions of the cabinet itself is 14 1/2" across in width, 11 3/4" deep and 13 1/2" in height. The containers inside that hold the herbs are approximately 1 1/2" wide, 3 1/8" in length and 1? in height.
In 1920, the collection was increased to 216 items and the price remained the same
