Translation: I offer my congratulations
This charming little baby wearing just an open backed nighty writes– “Ich gratulire” = I offer my
congratulations. The baby and the tree trunk vase are wonderfully painted and glazed. The baby has
blondish hair and blue eyes. The message on the sign and the bark of the tree are highlighted in gold
that is not rubbed or worn. Pretty little vases like this were presented on all sorts of occasions –
particularly to new Mother’s upon the birth of their child, or on birthdays. For those of you who collect
German liquor flasks, you will immediately see the similarity to the flasks – all were being made by the
same porcelain companies in Thuringian, Germany from the end of the 19th century into the 20th
century. Like this one, they are often unmarked. The condition is excellent. The vase is just over 5 “ tall.
Not only does the style of the piece suggest a date around 1900, but the spelling of “gratulire” supports
this date. A spelling reform was put into effect at the end of the 19th century in Germany, and since that
time the spelling for congratulations in German is “gratuliere” – an interesting historical detail!
